Puységur’s Animal Magnetism Files
A source-controlled investigation of magnetic somnambulism, cure claims, obedience, testimony, and how an extraordinary eighteenth-century belief system tried to turn itself into evidence.
THE QUESTION
What happens when a cure system starts keeping receipts?
Puységur did not merely report strange experiences. Across the 1784 memoir and its sequel he assembled witnesses, patient speech, written predictions, signed statements, notarial acts, remembered and forgotten conversations, failures, objects, and repeated procedures into an argument for animal magnetism. Final Vestige follows that argument without granting it the conclusion it wanted.
Source before story
Every major public claim is tied back to a volume, page locator, controlled translation, evidence limit, and ethics flag.
Failure stays in the file
Madeleine’s failed cure, Louis de Rieux’s failed prediction, Puységur’s doubts, and the late warning notes remain part of the architecture rather than being edited away.
Historical claim ≠ modern proof
“Cure,” “vision,” “electricity,” “rapport,” and “crisis” remain source terms. They are not silently converted into medical efficacy, clairvoyance, bioelectricity, mind control, or modern hypnosis.
SOURCE FILES
Two original volumes. Two different source roles.

CASE DOSSIERS
The people and objects that made the system look convincing—or unstable.
Care, authority, vulnerability, thought-response claims, and a conscience boundary.
A failed cure becomes public demonstration. The rumor outran the record.
Fever, violent crisis, writing, and an operator who presses him to rise after he asks to lie down.
He asks to be left alone; Puységur says he stops listening and continues forcefully.
Puységur confirms Thuillier’s mistaken belief that he had not entered crisis—then records why.
A cure story pulled between magnetism, bodily claims, and pilgrimage.
Fourteen years old; his altered-state speech becomes timing and operator doctrine.
A second subject instructs Puységur not to listen when Charlotte asks to be left alone during a painful procedure.
Concealment, restricted diet, altered-state medicine, and conflicts between magnetic-state and ordinary-state wishes.
Locked-room writing, selective disclosure, prediction, and the source file becoming part of the phenomenon.
The claimed disease-transfer episode drives Puységur into an explicit crisis of conscience.
The operator becomes dependent on the same diagnostic and treatment system he built.
Nobles, officers, surgeons, rapport tests, a bottle, a failed prediction, and a signed procès-verbal.
Notarial deposits strengthen provenance, not the magnetic mechanism.
The Buzancy tree is doctrine made visible, not proof made physical.
The conclusion crowns the system; the notes reveal operator pressure, false answers, and abuse-of-power language.
THE EVIDENCE MACHINE
How a claim becomes harder to dismiss without becoming proven.
What makes the archive unusually valuable
- Predictions recorded before claimed outcomes
- Signed and notarial documents
- Named subjects and repeated cases
- Failures and contradictions that survived publication
- Puységur’s own uncertainty and warnings
What still does not follow
- Animal magnetism existed as a physical force
- Magnetism caused the reported cures
- Subjects literally saw without their eyes
- Rapport proved irresistible mind control
- A witnessed or notarized claim established its mechanism
CONSENT · VULNERABILITY · CONTROL
The most important material is not the most sensational material.
The archive repeatedly mixes care with hierarchy. Subjects are ill, dependent, altered, young, frightened, or under the authority of the person recording what happens. That context matters more than modern paranormal labels.
“Do not listen to her.”
The source explicitly records an instruction to continue while Charlotte complains and asks to be left alone during a painful procedure. That is an ethics fact in the text, not a modern inference.
Which state gets to consent?
Magnetic-state Catherine requests concealment from her ordinary-state self; later she anticipates that ordinary-state self would refuse medicine. The contradiction cannot be solved by simply privileging one state.
Puységur names abuse
He calls steering thought-responsive patients “a simple abuse of my physical power” and warns that curiosity and operator pressure can produce compliant false answers.
TRAINING WORKBOOK
Read the archive without falling for the spell—or dismissing the evidence too quickly.
The QD-passed training companion contains ten modules covering source-before-story, evidence machines, rumor mutation, medical claims, consent, translation, doctrine by analogy, failure, cross-volume synthesis, and writing the Final Vestige version.
voir is not automatically clairvoyance
In this archive it can slide among see, perceive, sense, or know. Translation choices can manufacture a stronger claim than the French supports.
Electricity is historical vocabulary
Puységur’s électricité belongs to his movement/fluid/equilibrium theory. It is not modern electricity, bioelectricity, or “energy.”
Failures stay visible
A strong source trail does not hide the cases that missed, contradicted themselves, or forced Puységur to revise the story.
